Romania forced by EU to modify car pollution tax again

BUCHAREST, Romania - Romania's government has decided to amend the car pollution tax again within a few weeks, after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) judged it to be in violation of community legislation.

Government spokeswoman Ioana Muntean said the executive is working on a bill that abides by the court's judgment.

Romania's car pollution tax is contrary to European Union law, since it discourages the sale of second-hand vehicles purchased in other member states to Romania, the Court of Justice of the EU said last month, in a judgment issued on the request of a Romanian court.

Many Romanians filed law suits against the state to get back the pollution tax claiming it is discriminatory.
