SZENTGOTTHÁRD, Hungary - General Motors Powertrain-Magyarország Kft. will launch construction of a 30,000 square metre production hall at its Szentgotthárd site in March, as part of its €500 million expansion program it announced last September, local newswire Népszabadság reports, citing Tamás Zsolt, managing director of the company.

The investment, for which GM won a HUF7.5 billion (approx. €27 million) government grant, will double shop floor capacity of the existing plant and its annually capacity to 500 thousand engines, making the Szentgotthárd plant one of its largest in the world. The production of three new 3 and 4-cylinder small displacement engines is expected to begin in late 2012. The expansion will create 700 to 800 additional jobs at the site. GM's Hungarian unit produced some 220,000 engines and 270,000 cylinder heads last year.
