KECSKEMÉT, Hungary - Preparations for the production of the next generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class vehicles are well under way at the €800 million manufacturing plant German car maker Daimler is building in the Hungarian city of Kecskemét.

Pilot production will commence within eight months, Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary managing director Frank Klein said on Friday.

The factory building was completed by the autumn of 2010, on schedule, and manufacturing lines are now being installed, Klein said. The plant will produce the first car for sale at the beginning of 2012, he added.

Klein was speaking at a ceremony to mark the placing of a six-meter Mercedes star on top of the plant's highest building.
